The best of times and the worst of times?

I have not written a blog recently - mainly because I have been very busy handing over to the the new owners of the business.

The photo above is of the sample carder which I renovated in my garage in the year before The Natural Fibre Company took me over.

I have a series of planned blog items in the pipeline though:

  • what makes a yarn "good" or workable?
  • how are yarns designed - this starts from the opposite end to the Wool Journey
  • our decision to cease worsted spinning alpaca and other options
  • knitting for health and welfare
  • the eco/organic/green debate from our viewpoint
  • starting a flock with wool in mind

There may be others you would like?  If so, please email me with suggestions!

What's in a logo? Cornish roots and joining together

In the second thinking piece, I mentioned the story of our logo - probably a less enthralling tale than that of the lovely lady Tamar, but quite important to us and what we are about.

It starts with Sue (of course!), who was born in Cornwall and was a Girl Guide.  Therefore she has a fondness for things Cornish and, as it happens, also for knots.

But then, what is a knot for?  Normally it is for joining things together, whether ropes to other ropes or ropes to objects.  Bends are the type of knot used to join ropes together.

More thoughts ...

It was nice to hear from people about their responses to my "thought" piece, so I thought a bit more!  But there are a couple of pictures  this time, which I hope convey the words.

This is about our strategic thinking for The Natural Fibre Company and Blacker Yarns but also about British sheep.

We will also be producing a small item on the development of our logos and how they diverged and then converged in graphic terms and why.

We have recently made some important decisions, although of course we do this all the time!

Thoughts about truth, trust, values and the future

Oddly enough this is not an article about the UK and the EU!

In this article, I look at truth and values and how they affect our business and its future, and in particular how we can plan for the future.  We want to involve staff and customers in this process.

Truth, trust and values

At present, it interests me that there seems to be both more science and communication and less clarity as to what is really true than at any time I can remember.  For me, truth is tied closely to values and practical realities: how we see, respond to and judge what we observe.
