Do you have sheep, goats or alpacas? Or perhaps you have been given some fleeces or bought some with a view to making something from them?
You have come to the right place to start!
Here at The Natural Fibre Company we specialise in turning shorn fleeces into processed fibre, able to be used for felting or hand spinning or into yarns suitable for knitting, crochet, weaving or machine knitting. We are also able to dye the yarns for you.
Fleece is a very versatile raw material so, not only is it wonderfully sustainable and with great high performance properties, it can also be made into a huge range of end products: from baby clothes to heavy duty carpets, from sculptured felt to insulation and from household goods to high fashion items.
Of course, this means you have a very wide range of options to make from your fleeces! So we are here to advise - especially on what would be most appropriate for the particular fleece type you have or on what you can do to adjust the results by using different processes, blending or dyeing. We are expert at unravelling the tehnical aspects of processing for you.
- The first question will therefore be: what sort of fleece do you have? The different breeds of animal make a very varied range of different types of fleece, and some are more suitable than others for different end uses.
- Then we need to know how much you have. As we are a medium-sized company in terms of production capability, our machines will not deal with tiny quantities so our minimum batches are 10kg for washing and preparing for felting or hand spinning or 20kg for making into yarns. Our maximum batches are up to a tonne. There are options to add suitable fibre from our own stocks and we can also advise on other possible processors if you have less than our minimum requirements.
- Finally we want to know what you are dreaming of, and we will try to make it come true! Apart from processing, our long experience and network of contacts mean that we can put you in touch with knitters, weavers, dyers, designers, etc. and we are also able to advise on marketing or manage the whole process end to end for you.
If you already have ideas, or have worked with us before, you should find most of what you need on our Advice and Information page, where the price lists, order forms, terms of trade and a wealth of background information on processing are available.
