Nancy Nicholson is a weaver and heritage textile artist living and working in Totnes. Working predominantly in wool, she creates flat-weave, weft-faced rugs and tapestries as both made-to-order designs and bespoke commissions for interior and architectural designers as well as private clients. She also sells her own range of rug yarn.

We recently provided a range of processing services including Sorting, Scouring, Spinning and Finishing for Nancy, transforming the Cumbrian raw fleece into beautiful yarn, which was oiled on cone, ready for weaving.

Nancy says: “The Natural Fibre company has enabled me to start spinning the fleeces of my mother’s and her neighbours’ Cumbrian flocks to use in my work. Currently in the UK, it is very difficult to have fleeces spun in smaller batches and NFC provides this service in a very friendly and welcoming way. There is clearly a large amount of specialist knowledge present at the mill, and I love being able to speak to experts as well as being shown the machines and the process from start to finish.

I am particularly emotional about the wool NFC spin for me, it comes from my mother and my childhood and one thing I love about them is that I never feel silly for that emotion. I see the same level of investment and care mirrored back to me whenever I come to drop off fleeces or pick up yarn. It’s always a pleasure”.
