Caring for the Environment

As part of our Values, we have always worked hard on caring for the environment, not least because of our organic status. We have an environmental policy and an annual plan and look carefully at all purchasing decisions to see what we can sensibly do to limit our impact.

At present:

  • we try to use fewer plastic sacks and to re-use them - however we have not yet found anyone willing to recycle polypropylene, which is very frustrating as we know it can be done
  • we have changed back, from using cable ties to close sacks we are sending out, to re-used baler twine from a local farm
  • we still use the large plastic tags for incoming sacks as they seem to be the best means of preventing losses of sacks, which are a nightmare for both the person sending the sack and us trying to track it with the carriers - sticky labels do not seem to be good enough to stay the journey unfortunately
  • our scour and dye effluent goes to agricultural land licensed for disposal and in fact is for agricultural benefit - this is why our pesticide limits are so important - as well of course as limiting the risks of disease resistance and costs
  • we are gradually getting more paperless ... though computers seem to have a great tendency to multiply paper!
  • we pack completed orders of balls and twisted skeins of yarn into re-usable grip-seal bags and second-hand cardboard boxes
  • we monitor electricity, water and gas use and try to ensure we control these.  At present we do not use green electricity but will look at this when we renew our contract next.

We welcome comments and suggestions on how we could do more.
