Intern Profile: Alice

Intern Profile: Alice

Here at The Natural Fibre Company and Blacker Yarns, we regularly have interns who come for work experience with us for periods varying between 2 and 4 months.  We generally like no less than 8 weeks as it’s hard to get a good training and to feel able to do a bit of work in less time.  We do not pay interns, just a small amount for their expenses and we therefore often have people who have Erasmus funding.  Over the years we have had people from Germany, France, Spain, Finland and of course the UK and we have enjoyed their contribution, ideas and help.  Where possible we take them with us to shows and Alice, who was with us for 4 months in 2017, is one person who has not only attended shows while an intern but has also done “holiday work” shows since then with us.

What is your job role?

I am currently an intern at Blacker Yarns / The Natural Fibre Company, although I am studying Textile Design at De Montfort University, specialising in woven textiles.

Describe a normal day at the mill?

As I am a temporary member of staff I often float between the two sister companies. I often pick and pack orders, weigh in fibre when it arrives and add it to the system and also pack for shows. My other duties include keeping an eye on this blog and posts, aiding in design work and making colour cards. I was also asked to model for the company!

How long have you been working at the company?

Four months

What is your favourite thing about working at The Natural Fibre Company?

The variety of tasks I undertake on a daily basis and the satisfaction of seeing the raw greasy fleeces turn into beautiful colourful yarn!

What is your favourite fibre and why?

Before working here I had very little knowledge of different breeds and their characteristics – it’s not something you particularly learn at university! I’ve fallen in love with Blue Faced Leicester, it takes dye so well and vivid shades can easily be achieved!

Favourite pastime outside of work?

I have become an avid crocheter – now moving on to design my own patterns. I am also a lover of all things murder mystery.

Have you got any hidden talents?

I can fold in half like a book with my face flat on my legs.
