Passion keeps fleece from the bonfire

Until it was featured recently on BBC TV’s Countryfile, most people didn’t know very much about the Launceston-based Natural Fibre Company, but that’s about to change with the company’s first open day event.
The Natural Fibre Company has been spinning yarn for 20 years and built its excellent reputation by taking fleeces from farmers and adding value by turning them into high-quality yarns, which is now proving to be a huge success with the nation’s network of enthusiastic knitters.
An alarming fact is that many farmers spend more on shearing a sheep than they find the fleece is worth, however if the sheep are the right breed and kept in the correct manner then they can show a profit and this is something which the Natural Fibre Company is involved with through creating their beautiful yarns and products.
Located in Cornwall since 2005 when the company was bought by Sue Blacker and her family, The Natural Fibre Company launched Blacker Designs, a new brand which creates and focuses on natural UK products made from wool, mohair and alpaca in November 2008.
Anyone interested in finding out more on how the Natural Fibre Company are working with UK farmers and the fascinating processes involved in producing natural yarns should come along for the company’s first ever-open day on Saturday 31 October. Visitors to The Natural Fibre Company on the day will be able take part in workshops and master classes, tour the mill and learn about the latest range of products.
Both tour and workshop will cost £5, but half the entry fee will be returned by way of discounts on the range of products which includes throws, blankets, scarves, cushions, shawls, pashminas and a range over 100 knitting yarns including the new organic dyed knitting wool.
There are factory tours and workshops planned, but numbers are limited so book by calling the company on 01566 77 635 or to find out more information visit www.thenaturalfibre.co.uk. The Natural Fibre Company mill is easy to locate, right at the end of the road through Pennygillam Estate just off the A30 at Launceston.
