Continuing a wool spinning tradition
The Natural Fibre Company is continuing a wool spinning tradition and also uses flax, cotton, hemp, silk and other animal and plant fibres to produce yarn and fabric. From early times these products have sheltered us, kept us warm, dry, fashionable and helped us travel and trade.
There are two basic types of fibre: man-made (which we try not to talk about on this website!), and natural, most of which are derived from animals and plants.
At The Natural Fibre Company we specialise in animal fibre AND you will no doubt be pleased to know that this comes from LIVE animals who give us a fleece every year. Animals and are NOT HARMED during shearing.
We also use some plant fibres, like flax and hemp, and we try to ensure that these are produced sustainably without undue use of chemicals and energy. When we use silk, we use tussah silk, which is wild and does not harm the pupae of the moths when it's collected.
Everybody at The Natural Fibre Company is passionate about continuing a wool spinning tradition, not just wool, but also mohair and alpaca. These are the ultimate sustainable, high performance fibres, able to be re-used many times, absorbent of water and fire retardant.
It has taken years for man-made fibres (ugh!) to get anywhere near this. While one can make a virtue of necessity in reducing our piles of waste by using re-cycled plastics, it is surely better to start without the plastic in the first place?
