Placing a wool spinning order
Although we have all the wool spinning services you are likely to require under one roof - scouring, carding, spinning and dyeing - the range of options and finishes may make it hard for you to determine precisely what you want.
We suggest that new customers download the Customer Guidance Notes and our Terms and Conditions of Trade. There are two price lists, one Excluding VAT, for those who are registered and able to claim it back, and another Including VAT. These will get you started.
It is also important for you to decide precisely what you are going to do with your yarn once it is processed or how you plan to sell it.
An order form is not included as a download because we encourage existing and potential new customers to talk things through with us, either at the mill or on the telephone. We are not advocates of call centres or telephone button pressing, so you will quickly find a person to talk to!
How much will it cost to add value to your yarn?
It is difficult to calculate the precise cost of your finished order because we do not know how much your fleece will yield as this depends on its quality and condition and varies from one breed to another.
We have created a mini spreadsheet 'ready reckoner' tool so that you can calculate prices for processing your wool, mohair or alpaca. Please contact us and we will send you one.
Depending on the fibre, yarn (woollen or worsted) and finish you choose, as a rough guide you can expect to pay between £30-50 per finished kilogram (2.2 lbs) of knitting yarn, including VAT and carriage. A minimum order of 20kg, yielding on average 12-15kg of finished yarn, is likely to cost between £500-800.
To spin and then weave, you need to assume a cost of around £1,300 to produce 50 metres of cloth, or £26 per linear metre, enough to make 17-20 throws or 100 scarves. Blankets will cost more as they contain more yarn, but they can be cut and stitched to specific sizes.
So that, approximately, is what it will cost to spin your fleece. But before an order form is accepted, you have to comply with our pesticide requirements. For environmental reasons we cannot process fibre which has been treated with pesticides within three months before the date of shearing.
Some additional information sheets are available here for downloading: on the washing and storing of fleece, on shearing and maintaining the quality of fleece, and on yarn specifications relating to the lengths of yarn in balls, hanks or skeins.
